So often do we unconsciously reach for manufactured medicines when dealing with acid reflux. Whether prescribed or OTC, name-brand or generic, as a society we often get so enveloped into curing the symptoms that we neglect to address the problem.

High acidity in the body can be caused by many things, but more often than not it’s one (or more) of the following potential causes that most of us fall into:

  • Refined, processed and/or fiber-less foods
  • High levels of stress
  • Smoking
  • High alcohol intake consistently can lead to a weakened nervous system, which can lead to stomach problems among others
  • High intakes of spicy and acidic foods
  • Overeating and obesity
  • Eating too quickly

I am sure that all Americans are abundantly aware that all of the items on the above list can have a negative effect on our bodies. This article is not aimed at reaffirming that point, but rather to offer an alternative to manufactured medicine by providing natural ways to eliminate the symptoms AND identify the root cause(s) of the problem and attempt to resolve it [1] without the use of manufactured medicine and [2] before it gets to a point where real damage is done.

Natural Home Treatment (Suggestions) for high acidity

  • Taking a piece of clove and placing it in your mouth the same as you would a cough drop can offer relief from acid reflux.
  • Consuming milk and other dairy products may help during times of high acidity.
  • Fresh juice from mint leaves may be extremely beneficial in providing relief.
  • A combination of a tablespoon (or two) of honey and a tablespoon (or two) of apple cider vinegar, mixed with water and consumed before meals can be helpful in reducing high levels of acidity.
  • Boil cumin seeds and drink them in a glass of water prior to a meal can help.
  • Spicy foods, fried foods, highly processed foods and acidic foods should be avoided or at the very least limited.
  • Foods that are not ripe, especially those with high pectin levels should not be consumed.
  • Fruits such as bananas, cucumbers (not pickles!), watermelon and honeydew can reduce acidity and also treat the effects of acid reflux.
  • A good alternative to normal coffees and teas and that can also help with high acidity is herbal tea, especially those that contain spearmint or licorice.
  • Drinking lots of water early and throughout the day can neutralize high acid levels.
  • Make sure that you are getting enough sleep.
  • Drinking cabbage juice can help with acidity.
  • Raw vegetables such as onions and radishes should not be consumed in high levels. (They are both very nutritious foods and should not be eliminated, just monitored)
  • Taking a tablespoon of white vinegar before meals can also help control the acid levels.
  • Using spices such as ginger and coriander can be beneficial and help control high acidity as well.
